Presentation Types

Types of Presentations in an iMOOT

Plenary Presentations

A plenary session is a session of a conference to which all conference participants attend. The plenary sessions have the form of an extended oral presentation that demonstrate exceptional research and delivery regarding some major aspect of the conference theme. The plenary presentation is delivered by a keynote speaker who establishes the framework for the following programme of events or conference agenda.

Academic Paper

A presentation of an academic paper is about presenting original research and getting feedback from peers. The presentation is followed by a discussion of the ideas that were presented along with critique and evaluation by the participants.

Panel Discussion

A panel discussion, or simply a panel, involves a group of people gathered to discuss a topic in front of an audience - in this case, the participants of the conference.  Panels usually include a moderator who guides the discussion and sometimes elicits audience questions, with the goal of being informative and entertaining.

Artistic Performance

The Performance is a form of art that is presented to an audience via multimedia at the conference. It may be either scripted or unscripted, random or carefully orchestrated, spontaneous or otherwise carefully planned -- with or without audience participation. It can be any situation that involves four basic elements: time, space, the performer's body, or presence in a medium, and a relationship between performer and audience. Performance art can happen anywhere, in any type of venue or setting and for any length of time. The actions of an individual or a group at a particular place and in a particular time constitute the work.

The video of the performance is presented at the conference, plus the performer will give a short presentation about the performance followed by interaction with the conference participants.

Portfolio Exhibitions

A portfolio exhibition is an organized presentation of a collection of work, generally in some artistic form(s) - music, visual art, etc -- that relates to the conference theme. An art exhibition includes an array of human-made artifacts such as paintings, drawings, crafts, sculpture, video installations, sound installations, interactive art, etc. The art exhibition may focus on one artist, one group, or one genre.

Interpretive exhibitions may require more context to explain the items being displayed. The exhibition should relate to the conference theme by including electronic text, dioramas, charts, maps, and interactive displays that may provide necessary explanations of background and concepts. Interpretive graphics may approach the conference theme from a wide range of disciplines including archaeology, anthropology, ethnology, history, technology, social history, sociology, etc.

Poster Presentation

A poster presentation, at a congress or conference with an academic or professional focus, is the presentation of research information in the form of a paper poster that conference participants may view. A poster session is an event at which many such posters are presented. Poster sessions are particularly prominent at scientific conferences such as medical conferences.

Round Table

A Round Table usually involves at least 5 short, linked contributions from different contributors. When submitting the proposal for a round table, the nominator must have at least 3 papers (from 3 different authors) for proposal; he will make the selection of additional participants to the round table together with the reviewers of the conference. The coordinator of a round table is also responsible for the coordination of the publication of the papers.

Workshop Presentation

A workshop is designed to teach something or develop a specific skill. A workshop doesn't necessarily have to present original research; it is directed more towards teaching and learning in an interactive environment. Active participation from attendees is encouraged in a workshop, and small activities are often conducted to keep the participants engaged.

Student Poster Competition

The student poster competition offers the opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to submit the research that they have completed to a panel of judges. The poster presentation is a presentation of research information in the form of a paper poster that conference participants may view. A poster session is an event at which many such posters are presented. The judges will announce the poster competition winner at the conference.
